Collaborative partnership using Axolotl's technology to further the nation’s goal to interconnect healthcare

Cincinnati, OH; Bloomington, IN, September 24, 2008 – HealthBridge, the nation’s largest health information exchange (HIE) operating in greater Cincinnati and northern Kentucky, and HealthLINC in Bloomington, Indiana  participated today in a federally-funded demonstration  of the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).

HealthBridge and HealthLINC showcased the ability to exchange critical health information with other communities before the American Health Information Community (AHIC) meeting in Washington, D.C.  The AHIC is a federal advisory group established by the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

HealthBridge and HealthLINC, powered by technology developed by San Jose-based Axolotl Corp., demonstrated how geographically separate HIEs utilizing different systems can exchange critical patient information in an emergency situation.

“This project is about improving patient care by seamlessly and securely exchanging health information,” said Robert Steffel, CEO of HealthBridge. “Developing a nationwide network will make it easier for doctors to have the information they need to provide high quality care.  Regardless of where a patient is treated, the necessary information flows with them.”

HHS announced in May 2008 that HealthBridge and HealthLINC were one of six organizations awarded federal funds to help create the standards and agreements necessary for secure electronic communication of health information between selected communities and states. This effort is part of the President’s goal to enable most Americans to have access to secure electronic health records by 2014.

“Axolotl’s ongoing commitment to improve the exchange of health information is evident in our involvement with NHIN2.  We are excited about the partnership and accomplishments attained with HealthBridge and HealthLINC in this effort toward a better connected nation,” stated Ray Scott, CEO of Axolotl.

During the demonstration, HealthLINC’s executive director, Dr. Todd Rowland, presented how the technology being demonstrated could impact healthcare in the future.

“Connecting healthcare nationwide will ensure that healthcare providers have better health information at the point of care,” stated Dr. Rowland. “Today’s demonstration showed that connected technology can save lives, especially in emergency situations.”
